的 King William’s School, the Maryl和 colony’s “free” school, is founded.

1784

的 state of Maryl和 charters St. 约翰的大学, merging it with King William’s School; four of the college founders signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

1789

Francis Scott Key, a St. 约翰的校友, watches the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore 和 pens a poem—“圣ar-Spangled Banner”—commemorating the American victory.

1899

1909

A fire engulfs 麦克道尔大厅 和 nearly burns the historic center of St. 约翰的大学 to the ground; in the aftermath of the blaze, alumni successfully advocate to have the building restored as close as possible to the original design.

1937

Stringfellow Barr 和 Scott Buchanan implement their big idea, 新计划, which the college still follows today.

1950

On September 12, St. 约翰的 announced a new philanthropy-centered financial model 和 tuition for undergraduate students was reduced from more than $52,000 to $35,000 beginning with the 2019–20 academic year.
